MEDICAL RIDES

These choices are available for medical appointments. Some programs may have limited availability , so reserve early.

NEWTON DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR SERVICES and COUNCIL ON AGING: Transportation for Newton seniors to medical appointments in Newton as well as to other nearby destinations. Call 617-796-1288 for additional details and to reserve your ride three days in advance. Rides are available Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Voucher books can be obtained through the Newton Senior Center. Please contact Alice Bailey at 617-796-1664 or by e-mail abailey@newtonma.gov for additional information.

THE RIDE: This MBTA service is for persons with disabilities and seniors who are unable to independently use public transportation. The program requires a face-to-face interview which can be scheduled by calling 617-337-2727. Free transportation to the interview will be provided by the RIDE. Once approved, call 1-877-765-7433 to schedule a ride. Cost: $3.15 or $5.25 each way, depending on length of trip and advance booking.

SENIOR MEDICAL ESCORT PROGRAM: This Springwell program matches seniors age 60 or older with volunteers to drive and/or accompany them to medical appointments in Boston and its western suburbs. To be eligible, an individual needs to be unable to get to medical appointments independently, and able to get in and out of the car with minimal assistance. The individual is responsible for tolls and parking fees. The requested donation is $4.00 each way. Call Springwell at 617-926-4100 at least two or more weeks before the appointment to make your request.

SHOPPING

NEWTON DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR SERVICES and COUNCIL ON AGING: Weekly food shopping trips are provided Monday through Friday. Rider may choose day, time and grocery store within Newton. Call 617-796-1288 three days in advance. Drivers help with bundles.

NON-MEDICAL RIDES

These rides are for broader or more flexible purposes, but may require payment.

NEWTON DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR SERVICES and COUNCIL ON AGING: The Newton Senior Center is located at 345 Walnut Street in Newton and is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. Transportation is provided throughout Newton, using the voucher system. Destinations include the Senior Center and Meal Site (reservations should be made by 4:00pm the day before travel). The library, houses of worship for religious services only, long term care facilities within Newton, to the 13 Village Centers in Newton, trips to Parks and Recreation Over 55 Programs and the Needham Street Corridor require you reserve your ride at least 3 days in advance. RIDES IN SIGHT: Individuals of any age who have limited vision are asked to call Rides in Sight at 855-607-4337 to discuss the details of this program.
