NEWTON DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES and COUNCIL ON AGING: Transportation for Newton seniors to medical appointments in Newton as well as to other nearby destinations such as St. Elizabeth’s and Faulkner Hospital. Call 617-796-1288 and reserve your ride three days in advance. Rides are available Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Voucher required for payment.*
BUSY BEE TRANSPORTATION: This Springwell-funded service provides transportation between 9 am and 4:30 pm to medical appointments outside of Newton and to the major hospitals in Boston. Appointments should be scheduled between 10 am and 2 pm to ensure a ride each way. Call 1-800-427-0230 between 9am and 3pm at least three business days in advance. Notify the dispatcher if bringing an escort. A donation of $4.00 each way is requested. Shuttles are handicapped accessible.
THE RIDE: This MBTA service is for persons with disabilities and seniors who are unable to independently use general public transportation. The program has eligibility requirements, which are determined at a face-to-face interview. To schedule the interview, call the Ride Eligibility Center at 617-337-2727; free transportation to the interview will be provided by the RIDE. Call 1-877-765-7433 to schedule a ride. Clients maintain a balance of funds with the RIDE. Costs: $3.00 or $5.00 each way, depending on length of trip and advance booking.
SENIOR MEDICAL ESCORT PROGRAM: This Springwell program matches seniors (age 60 or older) with volunteers to drive and/or accompany them to medical appointments Monday – Friday between 9 am and 5 pm in Boston and the western suburbs. To be eligible, an individual needs to be unable to get to medical appointments independently, and able to get in and out of the car with minimal assistance. The individual is responsible for tolls and parking fees. The requested donation is $4.00 each way. Call Carol Woolfe at 617-926-4100 at least two or more weeks before the appointment to make your request. If no match is possible, the senior will be notified one week before the appointment to make other arrangements.
NEWTON DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES and COUNCIL ON AGING: Weekly food shopping trips are provided Monday through Friday. Rider may choose day, time and grocery store within Newton. Call 3 days in advance. Drivers help with bundles.*

Transportation is provided throughout Newton, using the voucher system. Destinations include the Senior Center and Meal Site (reservations should be made by 4:00 p.m. of the day before travel). Library, Houses of Worship for religious services only, Long term care facilities within Newton (limited to two visits per week), to the 13 Village Centers in Newton, trips to Parks and Recreation Over 55 Programs and the Needham Street Corridor require you reserve your ride at least 3 days in advance. INDEPENDENT TRANSPORTATION NETWORK OF GREATER BOSTON (ITN): iTN is part of a national non-profit transportation system for members who are either seniors (60 years and older) or adults with visual impairments. iTN provide rides to a variety of destinations, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. iTN uses both paid drivers and trained volunteers. Annual membership fee of $65 (or $110 for family) to open a personal transportation account and maintain a balance to pay for rides. Base rate plus mileage: $4.00 for pick up and $1.75 per mile. Members call 617-208-8045 / 617-202-5563 or FAX 617-202-5339 to schedule a ride, by 4 pm the day before or by 1 pm on Friday for weekend trips. Drivers provide arm through arm, door to door service.
